Huffing and puffing over my exercise bike the other day, I reflected on my recent excellent consistency—which represents a break from my normal poor consistency—so I thought I’d share an insight with you.

During a 15-year-long career as a full-time personal trainer, I set up a lot of home gyms for clients. From a single piece of equipment to a suite of nothing but the best. One question they asked me often was, ‘What’s the best piece of kit for [fill in as required, but normally weight loss]?’

After years of squeezing this and that into spare bedrooms, cellars, attic rooms and garden sheds, I finally formulated a simple answer to that question. And, once you’ve seen the truth of it, it pays health dividends.

The hands-down best piece of cardio kit you can buy is the one you will use the most.

Results follow consistency. The ‘best’ machine in the world is nothing if you don’t use it. To get the most from your shiny new piece of kit, there are a few things to consider before purchasing.

Most of them are about you, not the machine.
